You might remember a concept in algebra called "factoring." Factoring means breaking up into parts that are multiplied together to give you the whole. You can factor numbers.If this does not make any sense to you, do not worry about it. Just trust me, if you do not know your multiplication tables, you can not factor. If you can not factor, you will not do well at all in algebra, geometry, or trigonometry. The same is true for mastery of working with fractions. So, in general, kids who do not learn their multiplication tables and arithmetic with fractions usually do not do well in math. It has been proven that success in science depends to a great extent on success in math. So, these same kids usually do not do well with science, either.
When I diagnose what the problem is, it is virtually always either they do not know their multiplication tables or, more often, they do not know how to work with fractions. I teach the upper grades in my school, yet I continue to see kids who do not even have basic algebra skills in place. As a parent, I am very aware of what my own children are learning in school. For the most part, I have been happy with their progress, but as they rise in grade level, I am starting to see more emphasis on a loose understanding of the concepts and less emphasis on skills-particularly skills with arithmetic of fractions.
Are the problems too close together? Make sure you can distinguish between the problem number and the actual problems. The problem numbers should be less obtrusive. Students with and without ADD and ADHD can become distracted by too many distractions!? Are there too many problems on the page? Some authors attempt to pack in the problems, leaving little room for students to show their work. The opposite can also be the case. Maybe there are not enough problems to accurately assess student knowledge. Are the digits on the printed page large or small? In my opinion and within reason, the numbers can never be too large. Exhibiting stress at an early age on elementary students eyes from staring at small print can lead to stronger prescription lenses.
