Granted, that will always be a tough uphill battle for math to win out over most video games, but the point is, students today are much more immersed in technology than ever before. So even if you need to pass out a math worksheet to review concepts and formulas, it will greatly benefit your cause if you design the worksheet to be as stimulating as possible. Therefore creativity is a must for worksheets to be successful.Regardless if you are trying to review math, science, reading, writing, health, or social studies, your goal should always be to try and create something that will generate desire in the students to actually want to do it. If you can do this, the battle is practically over already.
Among the dozen or so math word-problem books of note published in the past decade, one, written by Mary Jane Sterling, from a well-known, popular brand of information books, which I am unable to name here, stands out. The publisher has put a decent chunk of the book online at books.Google.com (go to books.Google.com and search for sterling word problems). If you are considering arranging extra math drills for your child, keep in mind that story problems are more like the real-life problems he or she will encounter, and, they help develop his or her critical-thinking skills. Children develop mental maturity like they do physical maturity. Think about the strikingly different mental development that ordinary math worksheets might foster in comparison to math word problems.
If you have read my article Helping Your Child With Basic Arithmetic? Stay Away From Worksheets then you know that I am not a fan of traditional worksheets. After writing that article, I found another credible teacher who has written many articles expounding on the benefits of worksheets. I decided some clarification of position is in order. The primary problem with most math worksheets is that the problems are already written out and the child need only write the answers. For learning and practicing the basic skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, it is much more beneficial for the child to write out the entire fact and say the entire fact out loud.
