Many people believe that you have to have a knack for math in order to do well in it. However, understanding the basic principles of math does not need any innate talent, or a genius intellect. What it does need is a change in attitude, and a solid foundation of basic skills on which to build. Mathematics worksheets can help you provide your preschooler with a solid grounding that will help them conquer math. The first secret you need to discover is that your children will follow your lead. Not a big secret to most parents, but sometimes we are unaware of the influence we have on our children.
Without being openly sympathetic, inform the child that you understand its frustration. Do not say, Ah, I also do not like math! It is, however, very positive to say, math was initially difficult for me, but I pressed on and got the hang of it. Realize that children who are having difficulty with math dread math worksheets, which is reason why they procrastinate and do their homework at the last minute or after several reminds.The way to get such a child to turn a good leave is not to rescue it if it has procrastinated attending to its 3rd grade math worksheets; if you do it will do it again believing that you will come to its assistance.
You are making strides toward a successful future for your child by providing them with additional resources outside the traditional learning environment. After all, children are like sponges. There are several standard exercises which train students to convert percentages, decimals and fractions. Converting percentage to decimals for example is actually as simple as moving the decimal point two places to the left and losing the percent sign %. Thus 89% is equal to 0.89. Expressed in fraction, that would be 89/100. When you drill kids to do this often enough, they learn to do conversion almost instinctively. Ratios and proportions are likewise wonderful math lessons with plenty of interesting practical applications. If three pans of pizza, one kilo of spaghetti, two buckets of chicken can properly feed 20 hungry friends, then how much pizza, spaghetti and chicken does mom need to prepare for birthday party with 30 kids? When I diagnose what the problem is, it is virtually always either they do not know their multiplication tables or, more often, they do not know how to work with fractions. I teach the upper grades in my school, yet I continue to see kids who do not even have basic algebra skills in place. As a parent, I am very aware of what my own children are learning in school. For the most part, I have been happy with their progress, but as they rise in grade level, I am starting to see more emphasis on a loose understanding of the concepts and less emphasis on skills-particularly skills with arithmetic of fractions.
How often have you sat faced with a list of figures - balancing the check book, credit card statement or filling out tax forms - and muttered about how much you hate math, how hard it is, how you just do not have a head for math? You need to stop yourself right now! What you are telling your child is that math is a horrid chore, a difficult task, and one that you either have the talent to do, or you do not. You are making your child anxious about a school subject that they will have to do for many years - and a skill that they will need for the rest of their lives. You are also telling them that if they struggle with math, it just means that they do not have the talent for it - and it is therefore not their fault, and there is nothing they can do about it.
In other words, they are locked out of most of the growth that our economy is going to experience in the future. According to the federal government, eight out of ten jobs in the next twenty years are going to be computer related. If you want your child to have access to the major portion of jobs in the future, your child must master math. It is that simple. Teachers are actually doing their best to educate children. The problems with education are not so much on the level of teachers as with the institution as a whole. It is kind of like the state of communications in our country before the deregulation of the telephone companies. Before deregulation, one and only one advancement--the touch tone phone. After deregulation, well you have cell phones, the Internet, instant messaging, you name it!
