How Do You Find Points In A Graph? This set of numbers (2, 3) is an example of an ordered pair. The first number refers to the value of x while the second number stands for the value of y. When ordered pairs are used to find points on the grid, they are called the coordinates of the point. In above example, the x coordinate is 2 while the y coordinate is 3. Together, they enable you to locate the point (2, 3) on the grid. What is the point of all this? Well, ever wondered how ships describe exactly where they are in the vastness of the ocean? To be able to locate places, people have to draw a grid over the map and describe points with the help of x and y coordinates.
Another problem with almost all worksheets is that they do not prevent incorrect answers. Self-checking worksheets just let the student know they did something wrong-after the fact. I am a firm believer in the concept that, if at all possible, learning should be structured in small chunks in such a way that there is very little possibility for error. Worksheets often allow for mistakes to be made and then to be repeated many times. A mistake that gets practiced is extremely difficult to correct. This especially happens when worksheets are used as time fillers or baby sitters and the work is not really being supervised.
For seven years I have watched my beautiful son hunched over math worksheets. He finds little enjoyment from them and I had rather see him chasing butterflies. They have certainly helped his Math performance at school and he is top of his class, but I wonder if the effort has been worth it in the big scheme of things. He is currently solving about 100 polynomials per day. Man, he can really solve polynomials, and fast. But for what? His arithmetic skills are awesome but when presented with a math story problem, he falls apart, helpless. No matter how many times I suggest that he read the problem carefully, note down the givens, assign names to intermediate and final values, form equations, activate his engine (brain).
Is it his fault that he lacks confidence with word problems? Not entirely. Our actions, as educators, seem to imply a belief that solving word problems should come more naturally than simpler operations like arithmetic and algebra. Many parents and teachers feel justified in encouraging (i.e. forcing) a child to work hundreds or thousands of math worksheets, drill multiplication tables, long division but few encourage solving hundreds of story problems. One suspects that the relative ease of creating and checking ordinary math worksheets keeps the focus of math education on simple, atomic operations at the expense of more holistic story problems.
Using current word processing programs and computers allow worksheets to be created using colorful graphics that children will find very enticing. This makes them more comfortable and relaxed the worksheet can look more like a game than a test. Using this colorful format, kids are able to feel eager to learn. The most exciting part is now they are developing online worksheets that have animated graphics. These can be access on a website from anywhere they have computer access which makes it an attractive solution to entertain your child while learning.
Worksheets are slowly becoming an important tool of learning for little children. Nowadays, worksheets are planned and created by many companies, publishers and schools. Some sell these worksheets both online and off line and others let people download them from the internet. Since there are so many worksheets available in the market, it may be difficult for parents to know which the appropriate and right worksheet is for their child. This article will take you through the basic elements of a good worksheet for children. Creating a worksheet requires a lot of planning and research. Things like the purpose of the worksheet, the age group for which it is being created and the resources available to solve the worksheets should be considered.
Teachers, who are adept in the subject, rack their brains and generate new worksheets with a support answer key to guide the instructor. There is no limit to the number of worksheets you generate for the class or tutorials and they can be used for distribution purposes. What are math worksheets and what are they used for? These are math forms that are used by parents and teachers alike to help the young kids learn basic math such as subtraction, addition, multiplication and division. This tool is very important and if you have a small kid and you do not have a worksheet, then its time you got yourself one or created one for your kid. There are a number of sites over the internet that offer free worksheets that are download-able and printable for use by parents and teachers at home or at school.
