Among the dozen or so math word-problem books of note published in the past decade, one, written by Mary Jane Sterling, from a well-known, popular brand of information books, which I am unable to name here, stands out. The publisher has put a decent chunk of the book online at books.Google.com (go to books.Google.com and search for sterling word problems). If you are considering arranging extra math drills for your child, keep in mind that story problems are more like the real-life problems he or she will encounter, and, they help develop his or her critical-thinking skills. Children develop mental maturity like they do physical maturity. Think about the strikingly different mental development that ordinary math worksheets might foster in comparison to math word problems.
Using current word processing programs and computers allow worksheets to be created using colorful graphics that children will find very enticing. This makes them more comfortable and relaxed the worksheet can look more like a game than a test. Using this colorful format, kids are able to feel eager to learn. The most exciting part is now they are developing online worksheets that have animated graphics. These can be access on a website from anywhere they have computer access which makes it an attractive solution to entertain your child while learning.
How often have you sat faced with a list of figures - balancing the check book, credit card statement or filling out tax forms - and muttered about how much you hate math, how hard it is, how you just do not have a head for math? You need to stop yourself right now! What you are telling your child is that math is a horrid chore, a difficult task, and one that you either have the talent to do, or you do not. You are making your child anxious about a school subject that they will have to do for many years - and a skill that they will need for the rest of their lives. You are also telling them that if they struggle with math, it just means that they do not have the talent for it - and it is therefore not their fault, and there is nothing they can do about it.
