There are some new materials being developed now based on what we are learning about how the brain learns. These brain-friendly materials should be an improvement over what has existed. I recently bought a book by Marcia L. Tate titled Mathematics Worksheets Do Not Grow Dendrites. I highly recommend her book. She gives a great deal of information on alternative activities that are better for your child has brain development and for learning. No matter what materials you choose, it is most important that you supervise your child constantly so that mistakes get caught rather than practiced. I learned this particular lesson the hard way.
Is it his fault that he lacks confidence with word problems? Not entirely. Our actions, as educators, seem to imply a belief that solving word problems should come more naturally than simpler operations like arithmetic and algebra. Many parents and teachers feel justified in encouraging (i.e. forcing) a child to work hundreds or thousands of math worksheets, drill multiplication tables, long division but few encourage solving hundreds of story problems. One suspects that the relative ease of creating and checking ordinary math worksheets keeps the focus of math education on simple, atomic operations at the expense of more holistic story problems.
Where is the answer sheet? Are the answers correct? Are the answers listed in a column that you have to match with the student worksheets or on a replica of the student page laced with answers? Last thing you need is to be in a hurry and red mark student worksheets when their answers were correct all along. The student worksheets should print squarely on the page. No cut offs allowed. A pet peeve: get rid of the header and footer if you are printing from a browser. Students do not need to know the URL of worksheets. It is just plain and tacky. If you do not know how to get the header and footer to disappear, find someone who does.
