There are some new materials being developed now based on what we are learning about how the brain learns. These brain-friendly materials should be an improvement over what has existed. I recently bought a book by Marcia L. Tate titled Mathematics Worksheets Do Not Grow Dendrites. I highly recommend her book. She gives a great deal of information on alternative activities that are better for your child has brain development and for learning. No matter what materials you choose, it is most important that you supervise your child constantly so that mistakes get caught rather than practiced. I learned this particular lesson the hard way.

Granted, that will always be a tough uphill battle for math to win out over most video games, but the point is, students today are much more immersed in technology than ever before. So even if you need to pass out a math worksheet to review concepts and formulas, it will greatly benefit your cause if you design the worksheet to be as stimulating as possible. Therefore creativity is a must for worksheets to be successful.Regardless if you are trying to review math, science, reading, writing, health, or social studies, your goal should always be to try and create something that will generate desire in the students to actually want to do it. If you can do this, the battle is practically over already.

For example, since I want to make sure my students get accustomed to reviewing the various math concepts and standards we have learned all year, I have them practice regularly. I want them to get to a point where they are so familiar with grade level math content, that solving these types of problems becomes automatic. However, caution must be taken into account when review is repeatedly covered in your classroom. You do not want your students to become bored or frustrated with the repetition. Another important point I keep in mind is that I never want this regular math review time to take up and hour of class time. I want it to be quick but effective. This is not instructional time, but time for the students to review material they have already learned.

Verbal problems allow you to practice your knowledge of mathematics in problems of everyday life and school problems. Problems train understanding, translation into the mathematical language (e.g. equations), solve it, check the accuracy and solution discussion. "Practice makes perfect!" This is true even in math! If you want to become better at working math problems, you have to practice working math problems!

Now that we know the benefits of mathematics what is needed to conquer this hard to tackle and arduous subject. Answer is quite simple actually, practice, a lot of practice from early childhood. But in order to perform any task or practice any task, one requires resources. Obtaining a resource is not difficult in today has modern world but affordable resource is definitely a rare commodity. Today education is a sector which gets very little funding from the federal government. A lot of you send your children to tutoring centers like Huntington, Sylvan, Score and others. But do you really know what exactly do these tutoring centers provide your children?

There are many math-based games available in educational toy stores that will help to reinforce the principles your child learns in worksheets. Computer games can help too, but depending on the age of your child, it is best not to encourage too much computer use at an early age. Everyday activities can be turned into math lessons too. A trip to the grocery store can turn into a math lesson if you encourage your child to help you count how many items you are buying, or add up the bottles of milk as you add them to your cart.

Without being openly sympathetic, inform the child that you understand its frustration. Do not say, Ah, I also do not like math! It is, however, very positive to say, math was initially difficult for me, but I pressed on and got the hang of it. Realize that children who are having difficulty with math dread math worksheets, which is reason why they procrastinate and do their homework at the last minute or after several reminds. The way to get such a child to turn a good leave is not to rescue it if it has procrastinated attending to its 3rd grade math worksheets; if you do it will do it again believing that you will come to its assistance.
